Join a nourishing, tender and supportive circle of women to experience the richness of memoir as we write alone and together. You will be sensitively guided into personal narrative, deep listening, sharing and witnessing as we delve into our own stories and practice the craft of memoir.

Six Wednesdays starting October 28th through December 9th (no class November 11th), from 1:00-3:30pm at the Salt Spring Island Public Library.

In a circle of wise, wild and wonderful lesbians, we will write alone and together, guided into personal writing, deep listening, and sharing to inspire and nourish your own creativity, compassion and connection. We will create a nourishing, respectful and explorative environment to reflect, re-member and record our pasts, honour our truths and gaze into our futures. Bring your self, your journal and the desire to write.

Wendy Judith Cutler is a teacher, writer and lesbian-feminist who has taught Women’s Studies and Writing for more than thirty years. She has been involved in feminist, leftist, social justice and queer politics, community-building and culture for many decades. She is noted in Feminists Who Changed America: 1963-1975 and has had writings in numerous publications. She is co-author of Writing Alone Together: Journalling in a Circle of Women for Creativity, Compassion and Connection (Butterfly Press, 2014). She relishes the opportunity to inspire women to honour the wisdom and power of their own words. 

Her memoir-in-progress is about lesbian feminism in the 1970s entitled Memoir of an Undutiful Daughter.  Wendy lives on Salt Spring Island in BC,  with her lover-girl life partner (of twenty-nine years) and doggie Rosey and kitty Iris (Pippy). Wendy Judith Cutler, Teacher, Writer and Longtime Lesbian-Feminist Supporter of IOW, will facilitate a writing workshop based upon the book she has co-written (with Ahava Shira and Lynda Monk of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, where she now lives):  Writing Alone Together: Journaling Within a Circle of Women for Creativity, Compassion and Connection.

Join a nourishing, explorative and tender circle of women as you are guided into personal writing, deep listening, sharing and witnessing as we write alone and together. Within this sacred space, we will ignite our creativity, engage our compassion and deepen connections with one another and our authentic selves. The workshop will take place from 1-3pm and the book launch from 3-4pm. Come for the workshop and stay for the book launch. Or come only for one or the other. Refreshments will be served.

Peruse the Feminist Archives as well and discover gems of our feminist hestories. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Feminist Archives. (Wendy hopes that old friends and past students, colleagues and sister-activists will come to share in this celebration and honouring of our herstories together.)

Course Description

In this workshop, you will experience the richness of memoir and writing that captures the utter complexities and stark simplicities of your life. Through memoir, autobiography, storytelling and personal narrative, you will be guided into personal writing, deep listening, sharing and, most importantly, writing for yourself. You will explore guiding principles, experiment with varying approaches, rediscover memories, deepen connections with your authentic self and create intention in writing from and about your life.

Topics:

  • Introduction to memoir, autobiography, storytelling and personal narrative
  • Engage in the practices of writing freely, careful listening, sharing and witnessing
  • Experiment with creative approaches to writing from and about women’s lives
  • Understand the connections between self-intimacy and writing authentically
  • Create a nurturing, supportive environment with other women

Learning Outcomes:

  • Better understand the connections between developing self-intimacy and writing more fluidly and clearly about your own life
  • Practice the valuable skills of careful listening, receptivity and witnessing others as well as valuing the process of personal sharing
  • Recognize the importance of being part of a learning environment and see the ways in which this experience can encourage you to create community with others
  • Feel strengthened and engaged in your own writing process
